#82 - The Militarization of Law Enforcement

Throughout the country police departments of all sizes have been militarized little by little over the years by the US Government to the point that it is becoming very difficult to distinguish police officers from soldiers. The Department of Homeland Security offers used military surplus equipment, including MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles as well as the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), commonly known as the Humvee. These vehicles are currently being used to combat terrorists and insurgents in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq and the DHS is giving them to police departments here in the United States so that they are better equipped to combat its citizens

#81 - Border Wars

Before I even start writing this, I already know that I am going to offend a lot of snowflakes out there and they are going to want to call me all kinds of nasty names, and guess what, I couldn't care less. Tensions have risen at the southern US border with Mexico over the past few years because of differences in feelings over immigration. I would like to point out that I am completely in favor of immigration. I myself am a descendant of immigrants from Scotland. If it were not for the United States having an immigration policy, I would not be sitting here writing this today. I should also point out that I am completely opposed to people breaking the law and crossing our borders illegally si

#80 - Are Bushcraft Skills Necessary After SHTF?

You can find an enormous amount of blogs and YouTube videos out there by preppers talking about the need to have "Bushcraft" skills after an SHTF event so I wanted to take a moment and discuss this topic because I continually get asked questions about it. What do I mean by bushcraft? Bushcraft is a popular term for wilderness survival skills. Ok, so do I believe that bushcraft skills are necessary to have to survive after an SHTF event? Yes, and No. Yes, bushcraft skills may be necessary to have for someone that does not have common sense, which by looking at today's world may be a very large number of people. That does not however mean that if you do not posess bushcraft skills you can not

#79 - Radiogram Delivery Issues & Solutions

I have received several Radiograms for ham radio operators that I have not been able to contact to deliver the messages to. Either they do not return my phone calls, or the phone number listed on the Radiogram has been disconnected. Normally, traffic stations will just give up and send a service message back to the originating station saying that the message was undeliverable. I do not like giving up that easily so I have added a few additional steps that I will be adding in my attempts to deliver the messages. First I designed the Post Card shown below, that can quickly be filled out and dropped into the mail with a message asking the addressee of the message to contact me. Since I like to

#78 - Station Updates

Over the past few weeks I have made a few changes to my station to assist in conducting my tasks as the Pacific Region Hub for Radio Relay International. The BPQ32 computer program, written by John Wiseman GM8BPQ who happens to be another brilliant Scot, is the backbone of the RRI-DTN system. With the addition of BPQ32, it offered me the ability to add a few additional resources for amateur radio operators on Oahu like the addition of an APRS Digipeater and IGate, and a VHF Packet-Radio system. The APRS Digipeater & IGate uses a Kenwood V71A VHF/UHF radio and a Kantronics KAMPlus TNC. The VHF Packet-Radio Gateway uses a second Kenwood V71A VHF/UHF radio along with an SCS Tracker/DSP TNC.
